I bought the PC 14.4v drill over 10 years ago. Up until 2-3 years ago it was my favorite drill --- the first one I'd grab if it fit the task. I liked the size of it, feel and balance, it had good battery life, plenty of torque, etc. I'm a general contractor so I have a number of drill drivers including 5 Makitas (old ones), 3 DeWalts, Bosch, and 3-4 more I can't remember.



Getting back to the PC; the clutch gave out on it a couple years ago. I had it repaired because I liked it so much. Within 6 months it went out again! so I didn't replace it. The problem is whenever I use one of my other drills I always wish I had the PC again.... so I've decided to get another one. Hopefully the clutch will survive on this one. If it doesn't I won't buy another PC. If it wasn't for that problem I'd give it 5 stars.



I've been disappointed with the battery life on my DeWalts which are otherwise good tools; the Makitas have great batteries, I've had some Makitas over 15 years and they're still going strong, in fact I only remember having one old 9.9v go bad and it must have been 20 yrs old.



I've used a Panasonic and was impressed with it. I would seriously consider it down the road sometime when I'm in store for something different.







The people that write these reviews are so biased because they either did not know how to properly use the drill, broke it themselves and expected it not to break, or don't know much about drills to begin with. I have been using this drill for 2 years for renovating my home. It has screwed thousands of fasteners, been dropped from a ladder to the ground on MANY occasions, been left in the rain, and has just been used a lot. I have been thru many batteries because NI-CADS don't last forever, no matter who you buy them from. Heres what I found.

First the negatives's: The batteries don't last as long as they should......I have gone thru a dozen and others I spoke to using this drill claim the same problem with life. They need a better battery.

The drill is heavier than comparable drills.

The pro's:

The chuck has never had any problems....never slipped, never locked up. It chuck locks to make a bit change.

The drill is powerful for a 14.4 volt drill.

The case is very strong and held up well despite drops to the ground.

The batteries have strong cases also.

Customer service is not an indicator of a good company as it will vary with each incident or rep you talk to. Most people don't want to pay a lot of money for a product............so customer service get's cut back....with all manufacturers. If you tell them you dropped the battery and it broke because it was defective, I would be surprised if they didn't laugh at you. The solution.....buy from a reputable dealer.

All drills have strengths and weakness's.......find the one that has the most of what you want.







Before I found out the fact Porter-Cable/Delta had been to sold to B&D, I found Porter-Cable tools to be of high quality, and very reliable. Alas, the future is quite dark for Porter/Cable loyalists. For now you will get no more than grown up toys not a high quality professional tool Porter-Cable was famous for. Now though instead of replacing my Porter-Cable tools with more Porter-Cable, I will look elsewhere for the same level of quality.



Do not get me wrong, once upon a time B&D made very good power tools, but in the last 15 years or so I have found them suspect, even the more jazzed up DeWalt, so called porfessional tool, is not what it once was. What a mess.





The Porter-Cable 14.4 Drill is well designed from a balance and handling standpoint. There is more than enough torque to handle normal applications that the tool could be used for. My drill/driver has been in use for more than three years,which I do not consider to be a long time for a $180 dollar drill/driver. Shortly after purchasing the drill one of the battery flanges broke from a minor accidental blow. Since the broken flange did not effect the operation of the drill, I did not consider the damage to be serious. A few months ago while placing a battery in its charger the charger's battery guides (plastic flanges that guide the battery connection to the charger) broke off completely. I assure you there was no excessive force of any nature beyond normal use that would have caused the failure. This charger failure renders the drill/driver nearly useless. I would have considered replacing the drill/driver with another 14.4 Porter-Cable if it were not for the thoughtless response that I received from Porter-Cable after notifying them of the defect. Their (we aren't going to do anything about it response) did not even say, Sorry. From what I have read and heard, Panasonic is the way to go for top quality. I have a lot of Porter-Cable tools but it may be time to move on to another make.





I have only just recently(Jan 2006)got my drill motor. In the few times used,the balance is good and power is fine. Getting the second battery is a must. I only use it for home use so after 3+weeks of sitting I picked up the drill and the charge left in battery pack was great.

A 1/2inch keyless chuck came with tool, but I'm going to change to 3/8" chuck because I mostly use drills below 3/8". The 1/2" does not close tight on small drills.

This is a great idea for anyone with limited space or not.
I rate the tool as sold. Yes it should have a case and yes it should come with all the different drums. Get over it because they are not included.
The tool is very easy to use and the vacuum attachment works great.
One thing I would like to see porter cable make the router table plates for other router table tops.

Update: Benchdog did carry a router table plate so I could mount the sander in my router table. I also found it is much easier and cheaper to buy the 9" sanding tubes and cut them in half.




Delta 31-781 Sanding Spindle Set for 31-780 B.O.S.S. Spindle Sander
This sander comes with one 2" diameter spindle. If you need other sizes you must buy them (follow link above) . This spindle set is for the Delta BOSS but it fits the PC sander as well .The set includes some some table inserts and a couple of plastic parts holders. $65 is too much for the 5 sections of rubber tube (spindles) that should be included with the machine.
The machine is great for sanding large irregular sheets of plywood in preparation for edge tape. You can maintain a square edge (90 deg.to the face )
Get 50 or 80 grit for plywood edges,150 and 120 grit are too slow.
The dust pick is built into the base. It captures maybe 70% of the dust generated when connected to a dust collector or vacuum. The 1" vacuum hose is not included either.


If you want to use it like a benchtop spindle sander for small pieces, turn it upside down and clamp it to a couple of sawhorses.


This was my first time using this sander and I must say I was very happy with its performance. The sander was easy to control and had pleanty of power. If you have edge sanding to do, and you can't bring the project to the sander because of it's size, this sander is the ticket. I couldn't have finished my project with out it.


This is a very good sander, and I would expect that from Porter Cable, however, to get five stars from me, they better make a case, I will keep it in the PC box that it came in, but that won't last long because it is cardboard.

I do a lot of work with curves on 3/4" birch plywood that I later edge-band. I have a stationary spindle sander that I used to use to clean up the edges left by the jigsaw. I received my Porter Cable 121 midstream on cleaning up some of these curved pieces, so I opened it like a kid at Christmas and plugged it up to finish the job. Here's what I found:

First of all, the tool is quieter than I thought it would be. It's balanced well and easy to handle, and the variable speed makes it easy to get the results you want.

Secondly, it's 1" dust port does an excellent job when connected to a shop vac. There's a little dust on the floor, but less so than with my stationary spindle sander (which is connected to a central dust collection system).

But Finally, the edges that I get with this unit are less "wavy" than with the stationary unit. It's hard to control a big piece of ply while trying to get precise edges on a stationary sander, but with the PC, I just clamp the ply to the benchtop and get precisely the edge job I'm looking for. When the banding goes on later, you can definitely tell a difference in the way it adheres to the ply that's been edged with the Porter Cable unit.

In the last couple of years, several manufacturers have introduced hand-held tools that have taken over many of the jobs previously done on my stationary tools. Rail-guided saws and routers are some examples I can cite (without giving name brands). This Porter Cable Oscillating Spindle Sander is yet another tool that will change the work flow in your shop, and will yield better results on large pieces (countertops, etc.) than any stationary unit could provide.

I highly recommend this tool!

I really dont want to gush on this product but for the price <br>it is it will quickly pay for itself. I have used it numerous times on wood, solid surface, and laminate. It is pound for pound an excellent buy.


This sander works well and is a strong tool. However, a few changes need to be made before it deserves a five star rating. First, the straight edge fence provided with this expensive product is trash. Porter Cable probable spent two or three cents on this important accessary (and it shows). Secondly, this tool needs a case. Porter Cable does not make a case to fit this sander. Thirdly, you must purchase an adapter plate to attach the sander to the P.C. router table (poor design). Otherwise, the sander is another strong and reliable tool from Porter Cable.


It's amazing that no one else thought of the portable spindle sander idea before this. I find myself turning to this tool more and more. I've used it to clean and straighten plywood edges using the included straight edge - it does a terrific job. I've also used it to trim fit an already hung Mahogany door. Yes, I could have used a planer, but this tool made easy work of sanding down the high spots. I'll be doing some curved work soon and I'm not dreading the post jigsaw cleanup - this will make easy work of that as well. I'm giving this four stars because the spindle set was not included with my purchase - this should be made part of the package.

Great product. Porter-Cable quality you can depend on. Was sorry I didn't buy the combo pack with both fixed and plunge bases in the beginning. A great deal on Amazon made it possible to get one.


I ordered this wondering which version I'd end up with. I received the Type 3 (newest) and it's great! The original base had me lean over it just to plunge the thing. The new 8931 can be plunged with two fingers. I love it!


I just received a PC 8931 router base. It is the older, through the base dust collection, round bottom model. Why are they keeping the same part number for a very different plunge base? Now I need to return this base, losing 25% for a restocking fee, plus shipping. Only shop Hechinger.com if you think that is a good return policy. And Porter Cable, get it together if you want to keep your customers. So make sure you will get the new, improved 3981 if you are buying.


They should send this base to me, and everyone else who bought the original version of it with the router! Just read my Amazon review of the Porter Cable 894PK router with plunge and fixed base from over a year ago. The original plunge base, which this replaces, was absolute JUNK. They copied the best features of the Dewalt base and released this as a replacement for the defective one they sold me two years ago.

I saw this new base at the AWFS woodworking show in Las Vegas last month, and it was an excellent plunge base. It solved all the problems (like rocking from side to side, and sticking)that plagued the original plunge base for this router, and added the dust collection feature. The photo in this Amazon page is NOT the new base. It is a photo of the defective old model that this version replaces. The new 8931 base has a large dust collection port in one of the plunge tubes, very much like the Dewalt model. I would like to have it, but why should I have to buy the replacement for the the defective base they already sold me? At the very least, they should give all the existing customers who shelled out hard earned money for the defective older base a discount coupon towards the purchase of this replacement.


This plunge base contain all the basic feature expected.
It offers 4 adjustable depth settings which allows you to route in multiple passes very easily.
There is a dust collector attachement but it did prove somehwat inefficiant when attached to my shop vac.
The knobs that let you adjust the depth settings as well as the lock lever are all made of plastic that doesn't seem to be designed to last forever.
Finally, the plunge mechanism is not as smooth in use as what I have experienced with some competitors router.
If you already own the router and are planning to buy the plunge base separatly as I did I would suggest considering buying a seperate dedicated router for plunge operations with a smoother plunge mechanism.
